PILOT WORKSHOP February 2013, Banda Aceh

AIM

The aim of the pilot February 2013 workshop was to test our key hypotheses:

1. An ideation workshop can be carried out within the context of a Banda Aceh coffee shop

2. Local youth will engage in an alternative avenue for telling their stories

3. Local community members are willing to engage in solution-finding

METHOD

A local coffee shop agreed to hold the workshop. The general community and coffee shop customers were invited to participate in a pilot design thinking workshop exploring the needs of local youth.Within the workshop, participants highlighted and framed the desires and needs of the local youth, creating a persona to represent a particular character; collectively brainstormed solution ideas; rapidly prototyped solutions within set time constraints, turning their ideas into a physical form; before testing their outcome to a coffee shop audience through role-playing, sketching and physical prototypes.

OUTCOMES

Through this workshop we were able to confirm that:

1. Coffee shop owners saw value in their involvement in the project, agreeing to the project utilising their space in the future

2. Local youth engaged in building an open and curious culture, where they are willing to express, develop and test their ideas in a risk free environment

3. Local community members and coffee shop customers engaged with an open attitude in solution-finding, with a high level of participation and the event gathering media coverage and support
